I start with the motion profile. I need to know how far the motion must be and in how much time. I use this to estimate the ramp times up and down. I add the two together to get the total time and then invert it to get the frequency of ramping. The natural frequency of the cylinder and load must be 4 times the frequency of ramping using normal PID control with feed forwards. The natural frequency is roughly proportional to the diameter of the cylinder so the shorter the ramp times, the higher the natural frequency must be. There are formulas for calculating the natural frequency and optimum motion profiles. I have formulas in Mathcad so I can estimate cylinder diameter in a few minutes.
